University administrative posts go to Mark Chidister, Susan Carlson
College administrators Mark Chidister and Susan Carlson have received
appointments to university administrative posts. Chidister, associate dean
in the College of Design and associate professor of landscape architecture,
has been appointed assistant to the president for budget planning and
analysis. The appointment is effective June 1.
Carlson, professor and assistant department chair of English, has been
appointed associate provost. Her appointment is effective July 16.
As assistant to the president, Chidister will coordinate and monitor budget
issues, university-wide strategic planning, and university submissions and
responses to the Board of Regents, State of Iowa. He also will prepare
monthly reports for the president's office.
Chidister joined the Iowa State faculty in 1981, and was named associate
dean for academic affairs in the Design college in 1995. As associate dean,
he has been responsible for the college's budget, learning communities and
study abroad program in Rome.
Chidister succeeds Rab Mukerjea, who left Iowa State in February.
Carlson's responsibilities as associate provost will include faculty
recruitment, development and evaluation; as well as policy, personnel and
conduct matters. Carlson succeeds Faye Whitaker, who is retiring this
summer.
Carlson has been on the English faculty since 1980. She was appointed
assistant chair for faculty development in 1997. She has chaired numerous
department and college committees. She has published two books on comedy in
the British theater, and currently is researching connections between
William Shakespeare and early 20th century suffrage theater.
The associate provost position is a 75-percent appointment for a tenured
faculty member. It is a renewable, three-year appointment.
