Academic titles

Here's a quick guide to understanding academic titles at Iowa State.
  • Tenure faculty -- May be any rank (assistant, associate or full professor) and are tenured.
  • Tenure-track faculty -- May be any rank but are considered on a "probationary basis" until receiving tenure, usually in the seventh year.
  • Continuous adjuncts -- May be any rank, but are not eligible for tenure. This is a set group of temporary faculty who were given a continuous appointment in a one-time university decision in the early '90s.
  • Adjuncts -- May be instructor or any rank, but are not eligible for tenure. They are appointed for one to three years and may hold a full-time position for no more than seven years.
  • Temporary appointments -- May be any rank, but are not eligible for tenure. They receive a one-year contract and may be appointed for no more than five years on a full-time basis.
  • Visiting appointments -- May be any rank, but appointments are for one year or less.
  • Collaborators -- May be any rank but receive no compensation. The appointment lasts as long as both parties agree.
  • Affiliates -- May be any rank but receive no compensation nor may they be assigned any duties. They are appointed for one to three years and appointments may be renewed. They are here to carry out scholarly activities that will benefit both the affiliate and the university.
