Tradition continues

Nutcrackerthis weekend

What started as a conversation over the dinner table has turned into a 20-year tradition at Iowa State. The annual production of The Nutcracker Ballet will be presented this weekend at Stephens Auditorium.

In 1980, Dick Snyder and Robert Thomas came up with the idea of using local dancers in the classical ballet. Snyder was director of the Iowa State Center and Thomas, a choreographer. The first production was broadcast on Iowa Public Television.

This year, Aleksandra Koltun and Alexei Lapshin from the Boston Ballet will join the company of 200 local and professional dancers. Koltun will perform the roles of the Snow Queen and Sugar Plum Fairy, while Lapshin will dance the parts of the Snow Prince and Cavalier.

An open house will follow Saturday's performance. Special recognition will be given to Snyder and Thomas in a presentation at 6 p.m.

The Nutcracker Ballet will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, and at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 9 and 10. Tickets are $12 to $14 and available at the Iowa State Center box office. For more information, call 4-3347.
