World institute looks at trade, debt themes

A scientist who recently named the Ames power plant as a top dioxin polluter, a Russian Internet writer and the former president of Zero Population Growth are among speakers on campus for the Institute on World Affairs series.This year's theme -- "Globalization: Trade, Debt and Civil Disorder" -- will be examined during the institute, which begins next week and continues into spring semester.
Zillah Eisenstein, professor of politics at Ithaca College, New York, starts things off with a discussion on families, nations and globalization. Her Oct. 24 talk also is part of Women's Week.
Institute activities during the first half of November include talks by:
- Journalist Naomi Klein and Nike employee Simon Prestridge ("Labor in Developing Countries and Multinational Corporations: What's Fair") (Murray Bacon Center for Business and Ethics event).
- Dianne Dillon-Ridgley ("Global Solidarity"), a member of President Bill Clinton's U.S. Council on Sustainable Development and former president of Zero Population Growth.
- Sergei Kuznetsov ("History and Humanitarian Perspectives on the Russian Internet"), a lecturer at the Russian State University for the Humanities in Moscow and a contributing editor to newspapers and magazines on the Internet
- Barry Commoner ("Aspects of International Environmental Problems"), lead researcher for a team that recently issued a report naming the Ames power plant as one of the top 10 dioxin emitters detected in Northern Canada.
- "Social Conflict, Trade Disputes, and Genetically Modified Organisms Revisited," a panel discussion by Iowa State faculty and administrators.
- "The Human Part of Globalization: Immigrants and Iowa's Economic Development," a panel discussion with representatives of the governor's office and Iowa diversity and immigrant projects.
