Women's Week features two believed to descend from Jefferson
A lecture by two women believed to be descendants of President Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings will highlight Women's Week later this month. Shay Banks-Young and Julia Jefferson will speak on "Race and Family in America: A Conversation in Black and White" at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, in the Memorial Union Sun Room.
As a result of recent genetic testing, Banks-Young and Jefferson are considered to be descendants of Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings. Hemings was a slave at Monticello, Jefferson's home in Virginia. Banks-Young and Jefferson believe their great-great-grandfathers were the sons of Jefferson and Hemings.
Other Women's Week events include a lecture on understanding sexual orientation, a one-woman play about a family dealing with schizophrenia, and a reading from life stories of women around the world. A complete list of Women's Week events.
