Hieber named interim AD

Elaine Hieber, senior associate athletics director and senior women's administrator, will serve as interim director of athletics, effective Aug. 11.

Gene Smith, athletics director since 1993, will become athletics director at Arizona State University, Tempe.

Hieber became assistant director of athletics in 1979 and was promoted to associate athletics director in 1990.

Hieber chaired the NCAA Women's Basketball Rules Committee for six years, was a member of the NCAA Women's Basketball Committee for six years and served on the NCAA Basketball Marketing Committee. She has served on the executive board of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and was a member of the Governor's Council on Sport and Physical Fitness.

Pete Taylor, associate athletics director, was named interim senior associate athletics director. He also will serve as interim director of men's football and basketball operations. Taylor has been at Iowa State since 1990, serving the past five years as associate athletics director for external affairs.

The search for a permanent athletics director will begin this month. James Melsa, dean of the College of Engineering, will chair the search committee.

The committee members are Gina Curtis, student-athlete in women's track; Jamie Beyer, student-athlete in men's track; Bill Fennelly, women's basketball coach; Laurie Gustafson, assistant athletic director; Trip Hedrick, men's swimming coach; Julie Manning, women's golf coach; Donald Reed, assistant athletic director; Corley Brooke, professor of human development and family studies and director of the Center for Teaching Excellence; Tom Hill, vice president for student affairs; Tahira Hira, associate vice provost for extension; Richard Horton, professor of computer engineering and ISU Athletic Council chair; Lorraine Hoffman, professor of veterinary diagnostic and production animal medicine; Barbara Licklider, assistant professor of professional studies and Big 12 faculty representative; Tom Mitchell, ISU Foundation president; Kathy Baker, civic athletics booster and Johnston civic leader; Steve Bergstrom, president of Dynegy, Houston, Texas; Kathryn Engel, athletics booster and Ames civic leader; Jon Fleming, Ames physician; Richard Jacobson, president of Jacobson Warehouse Co.; Dan Rupprecht, owner of R & R Realty of West Des Moines; and Gary Thompson, president of Gary Thompson Oil in Ames.


The first committee meeting will be Monday, Aug. 28, from 1 to 3 p.m. in 114 Marston Hall.
