Plant Sciences Institute finalist to visit campus

Stephen Howell, vice president for research with Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research at Cornell University, will interview on campus for the position of director of the Plant Sciences Institute.

Howell will be on campus July 12-14 to meet with various campus officials and groups. The campus community will have an opportunity to meet Howell during an open forum and during a seminar at which he will discuss his research on the genetics of plant pathology and physiology.

Howell, who holds the title of Boyce Shulze Downey Scientist, joined Cornell in 1989, and was director of plant molecular biology at the Boyce Thompson Institute from 1988 to 1996. He became vice president for research in 1997. He also was on the faculty at the University of California from 1969 to 1988.

His research focus is plant-virus interactions, plant hormone responses and aluminum toxicity and resistance.

He received a B.A. in 1963 from Grinnell College and a Ph.D. in 1967 from Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Md.

The Plant Sciences Institute consists of eight research centers that focus on a variety of areas related to the plant sciences. Other candidates may be invited to interview on campus.
