Tuition grant deadline in May
Tuition grant applications for summer semester for eligible Merit and P&S employees are due by 5 p.m. Friday, May 12, in the department of human resource services, 318 Beardshear. The current fees are $122 for one undergraduate credit and $192 for one graduate credit; use these figures on the application.

The application form has been revised; applicants are asked to use the new form. Teaching seminar for newcomers is Aug. 15-16
All teaching assistants (new and returning) and new faculty are invited to a teaching seminar Aug. 15-16 in the Memorial Union. It's offered by the Graduate College and Center for Teaching Excellence. Workshops will cover topics such as developing a learner-centered syllabus, teaching large classes, using formative evaluations, using visual tools, developing a teaching portfolio, instructional technology, leading discussions and fostering creativity. The free seminar includes a family picnic supper Aug. 15 at Moore Memorial Park.

Lavender Graduation is May 4
The annual Lavender Graduation ceremony, honoring graduating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and ally students, will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, May 4, in the Memorial Union Campanile Room. Nancy Evans, ISU educational leadership and policy studies, will give the keynote talk, and ISU senior Mike Pogge will give the student address. The event is open to the public.


Jischke on Talk of Iowa May 3
President Martin Jischke will be a guest on the May 3 edition of Talk of Iowa on WOI-AM Radio. Talk of Iowa airs weekdays from 10 to 11 a.m. at AM 640.


Grants offered to hire international undergraduates
Faculty and staff interested in hiring undergraduate international students to help internationalize their classes and programs can submit grant proposals to the Culture Corps program beginning July 1. The grants, up to $1,800, will be reviewed on a first-come basis. All proposals must be received by Sept. 15. Applications are available online at www.iastate.edu/~internat_info/office/culture/culture.html.


Payroll change period nears
Tenured, tenure-track and adjunct faculty on nine-month appointments, as well as P&S staff on nine- and 10-month appointments, may enroll in a 12-month pay plan or change back to a nine-month plan for the year that begins July 1. For either option, application forms are due in the payroll office, 3608 ASB, by 5 p.m. Monday, July 10.

New employees are eligible for the 12-month option in July following the academic year in which they start working at ISU. In the 12-month plan, benefits and tax deductions are made equally from 12 monthly payments. Salary for additional summer teaching and research is added to paychecks during the months of the summer appointment.

Retirees set Spring Fling
The ISU Retirees Committee will hold its Spring Fling on Tuesday, May 9, at St. Cecilia's Parish Hall, 2500 Hoover St. Social time begins at 5:30 p.m., with dinner beginning at 6 p.m. Cost is $9. Send checks payable to ISU Retirees with choice of entree (turkey or ham) to the Office of Retirement Information and Planning, 88 Scheman, by May 1.
