Shakespeare's women on stage

by Dave Gieseke, LAS Public Relations
An evening of laughter, love and heartache come alive in the next ISU Theatre performance, Shakespeare's Women.

Arranged by Libby Appel, artistic director of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Shakespeare's Womenfeatures scenes from 16 of William Shakespeare's plays. The production takes place during a party set in contemporary times.

"The play includes the greatest scenes featuring Shakespeare's women all in one production," said Gregg Henry, theater, who directs the play. "It's sort of a 'greatest hits' play.

"It's a great acting exercise for the cast," he continued. "They get to wet their whistles on playing the great Shakespearean roles."

The play features comedy and drama, including scenes of such classic Shakespeare women as Ophelia, Juliet, Beatrice, Viola, Rosalind, Cleopatra, Portia, Kate and Lady Macbeth.

While the focus is on the women in this production, Shakespeare's men also get a little stage time.

"The men play a big part in the play. It's not like the women are always in the spotlight and the men are in the background," Henry said.

Shakespeare's Womenwill be performed Thursday through Sunday, March 23-26, in Fisher Theater. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. March 23; 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. March 24; 2 and 7:30 p.m. March 25; and 2 p.m. March 26.

Tickets are $10 and available at the Iowa State Center ticket office, all TicketMaster locations or by calling 233- 1888.
