Extension, P&S put heads together for staff development

by Anne Krapfl
ISU Extension and the Professional and Scientific Council are partnering this month on a staff development day. "Don't Shoot Skinny Rabbits: Thriving in a Changing World" will be held from 8:30 a.m. to about 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 28, at the Starlite Village Motel in Ames.

Extension employees have organized their own professional development day for several years and since 1997, the P&S Council has tried to help plan a similar day, either on its own or with another university unit. This year, the two will combine efforts, with the planning committee chaired by Ann Pisarik, a field specialist in Des Moines; and vice-chaired by Josie Six, staff member in Ag Experiment Station administration and a council member.

"We share a lot of common ground with P&S staff and we'd like to work closer with on-campus units, so this is a great chance to do that," Pisarik said.

The keynote talk, on dealing with change and identifying ways to be successful in spite of or as a result of change, will be given by Deadra Stanton, a Mason City teacher and motivational speaker. The workshop also includes two break-out sessions, with up to 15 topics offered during each session. Stanton will lead a small group; others will lead discussions on topics such as building Web pages, retirement plans, understanding the PIQ (Position Information Questionnaire) process, polishing presentation skills, wellness (including optional wellness screenings), upgrading office electronic equipment and international opportunities for staff.

Vice provost for extension Stan Johnson will give a closing talk at 2 p.m., with an ice cream social to follow. Pisarik said the event will conclude by 2:30 or 3 p.m. so participants may attend ISU's awards convocation if they choose.

The cost of the workshop is $50 and includes food and all materials. Registration information will be e-mailed to all P&S and extension staff in the next week.
