Lights celebration is Dec. 1
by Anne Krapfl
The Iowa State community will celebrate the coming of winter holidays with a "Festival of Lights" after work Wednesday, Dec. 1, on central campus. Faculty, staff, students and their families are invited.ISU carillonneur Tin-shi Tam will perform and cookies and hot chocolate will be served in front of Beardshear Hall beginning at 5 p.m. A short program, including remarks from President Martin Jischke, the lighting of hand-held candles and thousands of outdoor lights near Beardshear, and a sing-along led by the ISU Oratorio Chorus, will begin at 5:15 p.m. on the steps of Beardshear.
Following the program, guests are invited to open houses at the Farm House Museum (which reopens Nov. 28 after extensive renovation), the University Book Store in the Memorial Union, Sloss House and the campanile. Central campus sidewalks will be lined with luminaries or a horse-drawn wagon can deliver you to these locations.
Carillonneur Tam will resume her performance and those older than 12 years are welcome to climb the stair-well in the campanile. International student groups will have cultural displays in Sloss House. At the bookstore's open house, ISU students will read stories to young children.
