Opera singer Estes named music department artist-in-residence

by Majorie Sandner

International opera singer and Iowa native Simon Estes will be an artist-in-residence at Iowa State during the 1999-2000 school year.

Estes, who was born in Centerville, will be on campus for two weeks in September and two weeks in March. During his residency, Estes will teach music and performing arts classes, lecture on his experiences as an African American artist and give several public performances.

Estes is an internationally acclaimed bass-baritone who has appeared at the world's major opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Opera de Paris and the state operas of Berlin, Munich and Vienna. He is a regular guest at international festivals and has performed with leading international orchestras under many eminent conductors.

"The opportunity to interact with and learn from an artist of the stature of Mr. Estes is a terrific opportunity for our students," said Sue Haug, chair of the music department. "In addition to being a great artist, he is a wonderful human being -- this residency is a great gift to the campus community."

Simon will discuss "The Artist as a Public Figure: the Responsibililities of Life in Public View" at 1:10 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, in the Music Building Tye Hall.

That evening, he will speak on "Breaking Barriers: The First African American Sings in Bayreuth Opera House," at 8 p.m. in the Memorial Union Sun Room.

Estes will perform in "Celebrate America 1999!" at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, in Stephens Auditorium. He will join ISU music faculty and student performers in a tribute to American composer Aaron Copland. The performance will feature the ISU Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, Symphonic Band and the Ames Children's Choir. The concert will include Copland's Lincoln Portrait, African-American spirituals, Broadway hits and other American styles. Tickets are available at the Iowa State Center box office.
