The Iowa State graduating class of 1894 called itself "The Gourds" and had a motto of "Ever Climbing." Selected as the poet laureate of the class, George Washington Carver wrote "Ode to Gourd" and read it to classmates on graduation day. An excerpt:
Landing on the pinnacle high,
The gourd with motto greets the eye.
