Carver Capsule
Throughout his 47-year career at Tuskegee, George Washington Carver lived in a downstairs room of one of the dormitories. His clothes were shabby -- he bought them secondhand and did his own patching. Because he usually forgot to cash his paychecks, Tuskegee's comptroller used to visit his room once or twice a year to collect old checks and deposit them in Carver's bank account.
