Patriot award

Ed Kannel, professor of civil and construction engineering, has received a "My Boss is a Patriot" award from the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, U.S. Department of Defense. The award recognizes support of employees serving in the reserve forces.


Appointed chair

The National Technological University (NTU) recently named Mufit Akinc, chair of the department of materials science and engineering, chair for its materials science and engineering degree program until 2001. NTU, a cooperative effort among 50 major universities, offers 14 master's degrees and continuing education needs to engineers, technical professionals and managers. Member universities, including Iowa State, are linked by satellite telecommunications and compressed digital video technology to more than 1,000 work locations internationally.


Honorary professor

Glenn Schrader, professor of chemical engineering, has been named an honorary professor at the University of Queensland in Australia. The honor recognizes Schrader for the successful exchange program he helped establish with the university 10 years ago. Schrader also was instrumental in organizing the first University of Queensland Summer School on "The Environment and Global Technology" in 1997. More than 80 students have participated in the exchange program and the environmental engineering summer course.
