Date set for alcohol-free Veishea 1999
by Steve Sullivan
Following the renewal of an alcohol-free pledge credited with the success of last year's event, President Martin Jischke has given the green light to Veishea 1999. It will be held April 16-18, 1999.
"Veishea 1998 was a success because of the alcohol-free policy and the responsible actions of our students," Jischke said. "I am pleased that the student leadership once again has renewed its commitment to a safe, alcohol-free Veishea. Those who experienced Veishea 1998 realized that the event could be entertaining without the dominant presence of alcohol."
The five organizations that approved the alcohol-free pledge last year have approved renewal of the pledge for Veishea 1999. The five organizations are the Government of the Student Body, Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council, Inter-Residence Hall Association and the Veishea Executive Board, the student group that plans the annual celebration.
The alcohol-free Veishea 1998 was viewed as a success by the university because of high attendance at new and traditional Veishea events and a decrease in the number of arrests during the weekend, particularly arrests for alcohol-related offenses.
