Daily study committee convenes next month

by Steve Sullivan

A six-member committee has been appointed to study the role of the Iowa State Daily.

Committee members are John Eighmey, chair of the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication; Tom Emmerson, professor of journalism and communication; Sara Ziegler, ISU student; Fred Miller, Ames; H. Wilbert Norton, dean of the College of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Nebraska, Lincoln; and Allison Engel, Des Moines.

The study committee will examine the educational mission of the Daily, the role of faculty and paid employees, governance of the newspaper, editorial independence, the use of university funds and facilities, compliance with state open meetings and open records laws, and laws and regulations on competition with private enterprise.

The study committee was formed as part of a settlement agreement between Iowa State and Partnership Press, owner of The Tribune in Ames. Partnership Press filed a lawsuit challenging Iowa State's policies on campus distribution of publications. A settlement was filed in U.S. District Court in Des Moines in June.

The committee is expected to convene in December and complete its report to President Martin Jischke next spring.
