Next Faculty Forum looks at using humor in teaching

by Anne Dolan

Teaching and learning, in their best forms, are supposed to be fun. How about funny? Economics professor Ron Deiter will help lead the discussion at the November Faculty Forum, "What's so Funny about Using Humor in the Classroom?"

Deiter said he supports humor as a tool to spur student learning. His introduction will look at what humor is and its role in a classroom environment. Much of the discussion will be spent on techniques for using humor as a teaching tool, he said, and examples of what students find humorous or interesting.

Deiter presented a paper on the topic this summer at a conference of the American Ag Economics Association, and also has submitted a paper to the Journal of Economic Education for possible publication.

The discussion will begin at 6:45 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9, in the Memorial Union Cardinal Room. It is preceded by a social time at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6 p.m. Faculty and their guests may attend any part of the evening. Those coming for dinner are asked to make reservations with Jane Henning, 4-2906, njhenni@ iastate.edu, by 5 p.m. today (Nov. 6).

The next Faculty Forum will be held in February, when the topic is creating a constructive learning climate in your classroom.
