Women's Week observance extended through fall semester

by Tracy Griffin, News Service intern

The annual Women's Week celebration at Iowa State has been extended to fill the fall semester with noteworthy women speakers, including several women activists, astronaut Sally Ride and cartoonist Alison Bechdel.

"Because the semester is filled with such a wonderful array of women speakers, we decided to transform this annual event into a semester-long celebration," said senior Alissa Stoehr, women's week co-chair.

The women's fall celebration theme, "The Politics of Feminism: Celebrating Diversity," also is the title of the keynote address by writer and activist Gloria Steinem.

Steinem will speak at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, in C.Y. Stephens. Steinem is co-founder of the National Women's Political Caucus and the Women's Action Alliance, and president of Voters for Choice. She co-founded Ms. magazine in 1972. Her books include Moving Beyond Words and Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions.

Some of the guests already featured during the women's celebration were Nadine Strossen, president of the American Civil Liberties Union; White House communications director Ann Lewis; and Karen Thomsen, the spokesperson for the "Add Women to the Constitution" campaign in Iowa.
