Additional parking makes south campus more visitor- friendly

Improvements to two lots and an additional parking lot have increased visitor parking in the south part of campus by 30 spots.

An expanded lot 65 (south of Alumni Hall) now has 40 stalls, seven of which are handicap-accessible. All are designated for visitors to campus. Faculty and staff who had reserved spots in lot 65 have been reassigned to lot 111, south of the Student Services Building. Lot 4, south of Lab of Mechanics, also was rebuilt to correct a drainage problem and better use the available space. Lot 4 will continue to be designated for reserve and handicap-accessible parking.

"These changes address one of the top three recommendations - - adding visitor parking to campus -- made to us by the parking consultants, Rich & Associates, several years ago," said Doug Houghton, program coordinator in the Department of Public Safety. The other top recommendations were to expand the Orange route shuttle, which has been done, and consider building a parking ramp on campus, which Iowa State officials will look at in the next three years.

Houghton said the offices in Alumni, Music, Carver and Beardshear halls draw a high number of visitors to campus.
