This year, the conference is coming to you

by Diana Pounds

Plane tickets and hotel bills can make professional development conferences a costly undertaking.

"Not so, this year," said Vicky Thorland-Oster, training specialist in Human Resource Services. "This year, the conference is coming to you."

National speakers will headline the all-day "Power and Ethics in Leadership" conference Wednesday, May 27, at the Holiday Inn Gateway Center. The conference is open to all faculty and staff.

"We selected the theme because so many ISU employees assume leadership roles across campus," Thorland-Oster said.

Conference participants will be seated at round tables, and each speaker's presentation will include an interactive session that allows discussion.

Speakers for the conference are Edwin Nichols, an organizational development consultant with Nichols and Associates Inc., Washington, D.C.; J. Scott Raecker, executive director of the Legacy 150 Institute, Des Moines; Mary Fisher, a Kansas City humorist and "EnterTrainer"; and Patricia Morgan, United Nations director general for women and children's issues and educational consultant.

The registration fee of $50 includes a day of training (8 a.m.-4 p.m.) and buffet lunch. A half-day option accommodates those who need to arrange office coverage while several employees attend the training. The fee for a morning or afternoon session is $37.50 and includes lunch.

Information on the conference and registration forms were mailed to all faculty and staff earlier this week.

More information on the leadership conference is available on the Web at www.iastate.edu/~training_info/Ethics.html.
