Spring visit scheduled for Smith chair holder

Ruth Mandel, who holds the 1997-98 Mary Louise Smith Chair in Women and Politics, will visit campus April 5-7 and give presentations in Ames and Des Moines.

Mandel, a nationally known scholar and speaker on women and leadership, is director of the Eagleton Institute of Politics and a professor of politics at Rutgers University, N.J.

Her Iowa visit will begin with a presentation, "Moving Forward Together: A Women's Political Movement," at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 5, at the Olmsted Center, Drake University. The event is open to the public. A reception to celebrate the legacy of the late Mary Louise Smith and honor Iowa's women political leaders will follow.

On Monday, April 6, Mandel will meet with the ISU Faculty Women's Network from noon to 1 p.m. in 302 Catt to discuss "Women in Higher Education." Participants may bring their lunch.

Mandel will talk about politics and public relations with students in Principles of Public Relations, from 2:10 to 3 p.m. that day in 102 Hamilton.

Mandel also will participate in the Catt center's annual Strong-Minded Women reception, dinner and awards ceremony Monday and introduce Anita Hill's public lecture.

On Tuesday, April 7, Mandel will lead a symposium, "Not One of the Boys: Then and Now," from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in 302 Catt. The free symposium will begin with a screening of the documentary, Not One of the Boys, which Mandel produced in 1984. A discussion with former and current Iowa women legislators will follow. Participants may bring their lunch or purchase a box lunch by contacting the center, 4- 3181.

"We are pleased that Ruth Mandel and Anita Hill, who are personal and professional colleagues, could visit ISU in conjunction with our Strong-Minded Women celebration," said center director Dianne Bystrom. "Both are strong-minded women who have contributed significantly to the discussion and scholarship on women in politics and the workplace."
