Provost's Workshop in China
Registration opens next week
by Anne Dolan
The second of two workshops aimed at strengthening Iowa State's collaborative efforts with foreign universities is scheduled for Friday, April 10. The Provost's Workshop on China will include several keynote speakers and smaller panel-led sessions to generate discussion and interaction.
About 120 people attended the Provost's Workshop on Russia/Ukraine held in December.
Registration materials for the China workshop will be mailed March 10 to respondents of a fall questionnaire. Additional faculty, staff and administrators who want to receive them should call Judy Peter in the Provost Office, 4-9591, e-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org. Registrations are due March 26.
When he announced the series last fall, Provost John Kozak said he hoped workshop participants would identify cross- disciplinary objectives among colleges, departments and centers; outline initiatives for Iowa State; and create scholar networks among ISU faculty and staff as well as representatives from universities overseas.
Chemical engineering professor Glenn Schrader, who is serving as the administrative faculty intern for international programs in the Provost Office this year, is organizing the workshop.
"The environment, sustainable development and technological training are new areas in which American universities are getting involved," Schrader said. "We hope this workshop will help teams at Iowa State develop large projects, possibly involving such groups as USAID or the World Bank."
Schrader said student and faculty exchanges and student internship opportunities are other areas Iowa State could pursue.
ISU officials already have done some of the homework necessary to establish collaborative relationships at Chinese universities. Kozak led an ISU and IITAP (International Institute of Theoretical and Applied Physics) delegation to China last May. President Martin Jischke led a second delegation in June.
