First annual retirement info fair is Oct. 14

by Anne Dolan

It's time to use that nice shopping bag you received in the mail several weeks ago.

"Fill It With Your Dreams," a retirement planning fair sponsored by Human Resource Services and the Office of Retirement Information and Planning, will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, in the Memorial Union. Employees and retirees from Iowa State and more than a half dozen other colleges and community colleges in central Iowa have been invited. The fair is free and open to the public as well.

Forty organizations, both not-for-profit and for-profit, will have exhibits in the Great Hall. In eight other rooms in the Union, professionals will lead hourly, concurrent workshops on topics such as accumulating wealth, supplementing Social Security income, choosing long-term care insurance, reducing income taxes and investment strategies.

A detailed schedule of events accompanies this issue of Inside Iowa State (see pages A1-A4).

Ann Molison, ISU's retirement specialist and primary planner of the fair, said she anticipates the fair will become an annual event. A 1998 fair tentatively is scheduled for next October.

On the evening preceding the fair, Diane Oakley, TIAA-CREF, will present the keynote address, "Current and Future Issues for Retirement," in part illuminating how the new tax bill will affect retirement plans. As TIAA-CREF's vice president for education association and government relations, Oakley is the group's liaison with Congressional committees, federal agencies and higher ed associations. Her talk will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union Sun Room.

Carla Espinoza, assistant vice president for human resource services, has encouraged deans, directors and other supervisors to allow staff members to attend at least one or two hours of the fair. Espinoza noted that retirement is a process and lifestyle, as well as an event, and that informed employees make better decisions and plans.

Off-campus employees and other visitors who attend the fair are encouraged to park in the Iowa State Center lot and ride the Orange Route shuttle bus to campus. The bus stops at the Memorial Union.
