On-campus child care options expand

The opening of the child care center on the Vet Med campus last month created room for 84 additional children in child care services at ISU. The new center does not replace any existing services. Following is a list of child care options on campus for faculty, staff and students:

Full-time child care options:

• University Community Childcare, Pammel Court. Full-day child care for 65 children age 6 weeks to 12 years, uses a sliding fee scale, reduced rates for student families. 4-9838.

• Iowa State University Child Care Center at Veterinary Medicine. Full-day child care for 84 children age 6 weeks to 12 years; has a three-tiered fee scale based on family income. 4- 2273.

(Both have openings for children age 3 years and older, and waiting lists for children younger than 3; and part-time and half-day options.)

Other child care services offered at the Pammel Court location:

• Flex-Care. Hourly care (up to 36 hours/week) with low fees for up to 15 3- to 5-year-old children of ISU students. 4-5113.

• Rainbow Preschool. Morning and afternoon sessions for up to 18 3- to 5-year-old children of ISU students, faculty and staff. 4-2471.

• The Comfort Zone. Daycare for up to eight children age 6 months to 12 years who have routine childhood illnesses; care is provided by on-site nurse and childcare provider. 4-3333.

Related child care services on campus:

• Ames-ISU YWCA Sitters List. Referral list of babysitters for parents looking for occasional child care in their homes, including evenings and weekends. 4-1663.

• Center for Child Care Resources. Community-based, nonprofit agency provides assistance to parents in locating child care options in Boone, Marshall, Hardin and Story counties. 4-8833.

• Child Development Lab School. Academic program offered by the human development and family studies department for children age 2 to 12 years. The lab school includes options for pre-schoolers and kindergartners, after-school programs for 5- to 12-year-olds and special education programs. 4-8878.
