Executive director

Hector Avalos, assistant professor of religious studies and chair of the Latino studies program, has been appointed executive director of the Committtee for the Scientific Examination of Religion (CSER). CSER was formed in 1988 and is affiliated with the Council for Secular Humanism at the Center for Inquiry, Amherst, N.Y.

Award-winning paper

Peter Reilly, distinguished professor of chemical engineering, and Earl Hammond, professor of food science and human nutrition (Ag), are part of a five-member team that received the Archer Daniels Midland/Protein and Co-Products Division Award from the American Oil Chemists' Society. The award recognizes the top paper in the chemistry/nutrition category. The paper ran in the society's October 1996 issue of the Journal of the American Oil Chemists' Society. Former graduate students Arunthathi Sivasothy and Steven Johansen and former post doc Michael Dowd are the other authors.

Poems published

"According to my Father" and "Welcome," two poems by Neal Bowers, professor of English, were published in the spring issue of Shenandoah, a review of fiction, poetry, essays and interviews published by Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Va. Bowers also has poems recently out or forthcoming in American Scholar, Sewanee Review and Poetry.

Publications awards

Iowa State received several awards for student recruitment materials from the Admission Marketing Report, a national publication for admissions marketing. In the publication's l2th annual competition, Iowa State won a Bronze Award (third place) for its introductory brochure for prospective students. Iowa State won a Merit Award (fourth place) for a total package of student recruitment materials, including the introductory brochure, the viewbook, a college brochure (College of Business) and general catalog. The new materials feature a computer illustration that communicates new ways of learning for the new world of work at Iowa State, and position the university as a place where curious, resourceful and self-starter students can succeed.

Advisory committee appointment

George Beran, distinguished professor of veterinary medicine, has been appointed to the National Advisory Committee on Microbiological Criteria for Foods, a joint study and advisory group to several federal departments on prevention and control of foodborne diseases. The group also advises U.S. officials on positions and actions in the United Nations food quality and trade body.

Environmental achievement

The Master Woodland Managers Program, an ISU Extension program, was selected for a Certificate of Environmental Achievement from Renew America, a nonprofit organization that recognizes programs that provide innovative solutions to environmental challenges. In the last eight years, the ISU program has trained 521 volunteers who assist land management professionals to improve and expand Iowa's woodlands.

Excellence citation

Joseph Christensen, associate professor of music and director of bands, received the Citation of Excellence from the National Band Association, the largest organization of band directors in the world. The award recognizes outstanding contributions to bands and band music, and professional leadership that has inspired excellence in musical performance. The band program at Iowa State involves more than 600 students in eight bands.
