Special Collections closed during summer

The Special Collections department in Parks Library will be closed this summer during construction and installation of electrical shelving in the department's storage room. Special Collections includes the university archives.

From Monday, May 12, through Friday, Aug. 22, the department's collections will be closed to everyone, including researchers and ISU employees.

In addition to twice moving more than 10,000 linear feet of archival materials, the project includes adding overhead lighting, expanding the electrical wiring to accommodate the shelving system and constructing a raised floor, into which rails for the movable shelves will be built. The shelving project was scheduled in conjunction with the completion of the library's new storage building in the Pammel Court area.

The project will result in an improved and environmentally controlled facility to protect rare and unique research materials. Tyler Walters, acting head of Special Collections, said the new shelving will give the department at least 20 years of growth space.

People who want to donate materials to Special Collections this summer are asked to first call the department at 4-6672. The transfer of materials will take place after Aug. 22.

The library staff apologizes for any inconvenience during construction. Questions about the project should be directed to Walters, 4-0460, e-mail: twalters@iastate.edu.
