The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra's concert scheduled for April 7, 1997, at C. Y. Stephens has been canceled due to the unanticipated loss of a major sponsor. Ticket refunds will be given through April 9, 1997, at the site of purchase. If you purchased tickets at the Iowa State Center ticket office, tickets can be returned in person or mailed to Iowa State Center Ticket Office, 4 Scheman. Materials science and engineering chair appointed
Mufit Akinc has been appointed chair of the department of materials science and engineering. His four-year appointment is effective Jan. 1, 1997. Akinc has been a member of the department's faculty since 1981 and has served as interim chair since September 1995.
In addition to teaching undergraduate and graduate courses on ceramic materials and processing, Akinc conducts research in the areas of synthesis and processing of ceramic powders and fibers, processing of composite materials and intermetallics, and solid-liquid and solid-gas interactions in ceramic systems. Akinc also is a senior ceramic engineer at the Ames Laboratory.
Akinc succeeds Krishna Vedula, who left Iowa State to become dean of engineering at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell.
Steelcase prices going up
Steelcase office furniture prices will increase an average of 2.6 percent, effective Feb. 12, 1997. To purchase furniture before the increase, orders must be received by the purchasing department no later than Feb. 7, 1997. For more information, contact Cathy Beckman, purchasing, 4-9394. Summer internship program
A summer internship program for high school girls, sponsored by the Program for Women in Science and Engineering, will be held June 9 through July 18, 1997. Interns work on a research project in a science or engineering laboratory on campus. Interns pay travel, room and board. Information about the program is being sent to all Iowa high schools.
