ISU projects win state honors
Three classroom projects created by ISU faculty were among 10 award winners in the higher education division of the 1996 Iowa Educational Technology Showcase Awards. The competition is sponsored by the Iowa Educational Technology Training Institute at the University of Northern Iowa and the Office of Technology in the Department of Education to showcase exemplary projects that use educational technology in the classroom in new and innovative ways. All the projects will be featured in a booklet to be published later by the institute.
Following are summaries of the three award-winning projects:
- "Grand Rounds" presentations by senior veterinary students and ICN-based distance learning, developed by College of Veterinary Medicine faculty members Eldon Uhlenhopp, David Merkley and Stephen Pendry. With the help of the college's biomedical communications section, students prepare presentations of clinical cases, in which they have participated in diagnosis and treatment, for delivery to practicing vets around the state via the Iowa Communications Network. Ten sites currently participate in the sessions.
- Project Darwin, developed by Warren Dolphin, professor of biology, and media specialist Mark Windschitl. From a computer image bank of more than 9,000 slides and textbook illustrations, faculty develop classroom presentations which subsequently are made available to students over a file server. The server currently holds information for more than 30 biology courses.
- Use of the Web as a tool for interactive learning, developed by Eugene Takle, professor of agronomy and atmospheric and geological sciences, and graduate student Michael Taber. Global Change, a cross-departmental course, was offered spring semester 1996 with a homepage on the World Wide Web that supplemented classroom activities. The Web site included lecture transcripts, assignments, roster of enrolled students and e-mail addresses, and links to other sites, such as the ISU library and time-sensitive, weather-related databases.
