Week Without Violence starts Sunday
The Ames/ISU YWCA is one of hundreds of member associations in 20 countries observing the second annual Week Without Violence Oct. 6-12. The week is intended to remind us of all forms of violence around us and challenge us to go one week without perpetrating, participating in violence.
The ISU observance opens at 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, with a display dedication in front of the Memorial Union. A junk car, representing violence related to automobiles (drunk driving, carjackings, drive-by shootings, for example) will be on display through Friday, Oct. 11. Former Sen. Ralph Rosenberg will speak briefly about family violence at the dedication.
At noon Monday, Oct. 7, President Martin Jischke will talk about identifying and confronting violence on campus and in Ames. His brief address will be from the steps of Beardshear.
A panel of ISU faculty members and student athletes will participate in a discussion on violence and athletics at noon Wednesday, Oct. 9, in the Memorial Union Gallery. The panel will include Linda Lyman, a health and human performance instructor who specializes in sports psychology, and a representative from the ACCESS (Assault Care Center Extending Shelter & Support) office in Ames.
Also on Wednesday, the Des Moines group, B.R.A.V.E. Inc. (Be Ready Against Violence Everywhere), twice will present a program on awareness and prevention of violence. The first presentation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Ames Public Library, 515 Douglas Ave. The second, specifically targeting a student audience, will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on the main floor of the Willow Residence Hall.
The ISU observance concludes Friday, Oct. 11, at 1 p.m. with an activity on central campus that will promote peace. (As of press time, the activity had yet to be determined.)
