Student scholarship honors retired residence director

Colleagues of Charles "Chuck" Frederiksen have established a student leadership award in his honor. Frederiksen, former director of residence, retired June 30.

The scholarship will be given annually to students who are involved in peer government in the residence halls or student apartments and demonstrate outstanding leadership.

The first Frederiksen Leadership Awards will be announced next spring for the 1997-98 school year. Each scholarship award is expected to exceed $500. An endowment will be set up as part of Iowa State's $26 million President's Scholarship Campaign. Fund raising for the Frederiksen award has begun, with colleagues setting the long-term goal at $25,000.

Pat Robinson, coordinator of residence life for the residence department, said the award is intended to reflect Frederiksen's own development as a leader in the residence system.

"The award recognizes that leadership is an essential part of what students need to gain while they're in school," she said.

Frederiksen's long association with the ISU residence department began in the fall of 1949, when he lived in Friley Hall as a freshman. He was head resident of Godfrey House in Friley Hall his senior year and supervisor of head residents as a graduate student in 1953-54. After two years with the U.S. Air Force, he returned to Iowa State and the residence department. He became an assistant director in 1960 and director in 1967.

"Chuck has dedicated his working life to the department of residence at ISU," said Carl Moen, director of university student apartments and one of the organizers of the award. "He actively worked to implement, support and nurture the house system at Iowa State."
