Smith offers his perspective on politics

by Anne Dolan
Former Congressman Neal Smith will offer his perspective on American politics during a public reading on campus. Smith will read from his memoirs, Mr. Smith Went to Washington, from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 28, in 250 Scheman. The event is sponsored by the ISU Library Friends.

A Democrat from Altoona, Smith was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1958. He served in the House for 36 years, spanning nine presidencies from Dwight Eisenhower to Bill Clinton, before being defeated in 1994. In his book, he reflects on the highlights of those years, including key issues and events, relationships with presidents and members of Congress, and examples of how the legislative process works. The book was published earlier this year by the Iowa State University Press.

The reading will be preceded by a 1:30 p.m. reception, book sale and book signing for members of the ISU Library Friends. For information on joining the Friends group and attending the reception, contact Carolyn Opsomer, 4-1263.
