Purchasing department earns state recognition

The purchasing department is one of three public offices that will receive a 1995 Targeted Small Business (TSB) Award today (Feb. 9) during the TSB annual meeting in Des Moines.

The department is being recognized for a monitoring and tracking system it developed as part of efforts to identify and purchase products and services from certified targeted small businesses in the state. Targeted small businesses have at least a 51 percent ownership of women or ethnic minorities.

In an effort to support these businesses, the Iowa code requires state entities to set TSB purchase goals as a percentage of total purchases. The Iowa Board of Regents has adopted a 10 percent purchase goal. Purchases by state agencies can be a big factor in the success of small businesses and in the growth and diversification of the Iowa economy.

According to the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals, which oversees the TSB certification process, the ISU purchasing department consistently notifies targeted small businesses of bids and other purchasing opportunities, a key to making the program succeed. During 1995, the purchasing department bought more than $2.9 million in goods and services from targeted businesses.
