Inside Iowa State Nov. 10, 1995 Lyle Smith Is Head Baseball Coach Lyle Smith, Iowa State's assistant baseball coach the past 11 seasons, was named the Cyclones' head coach Nov. 6. He replaces Bobby Randall, who resigned in September to coach at the University of Kansas. Smith joined the ISU staff in 1984 after three seasons as head coach at Indian Hills Community College, Ottumwa. Smith's responsibilities at ISU included coaching the pitching staff and recruiting. In the past 13 years, he has coached 32 pitchers who were drafted by professional teams. In 1992, Smith's ISU pitching staff led the Big Eight Conference with a 4.14 earned run average. In 1994, four of Smith's Cyclone pitchers were honored as all-Big Eight selections. Smith had an 88-47 record at Indian Hills. He was named Iowa's Junior College Coach of the Year in 1983. Smith has a master's degree in sports administration from ISU and a bachelor's degree from Wayne State College in Nebraska.
