Inside Iowa State Oct. 13, 1995 _________________ NEW STYLE GUIDE ANSWERS MIX OF STATERS' QUESTIONS by Anne Dolan Confused about when to use "Hispanic" and when to use "Latino?" Need a little advice on polishing your table manners? The Interfraternity Council Guide to Style can help you with both and lots of other topics. On sale on the language reference shelf in the University Book Store for $12.95, the style book was written by David Collins. Collins is a graduate student in community and regional planning and adviser to the Interfraternity Council. What started out as a general style handbook for sorority and fraternity members evolved into a 25-chapter, 200-page style guide for anyone at Iowa State. Chapters address everything from English usage to proper use of the flag and the national anthem, from formats for letters and memos to proper use of university and council logos. "It's tailored for ISU issues. It's a reflection of what makes sense for this campus," Collins said, adding he doesn't expect readers to agree with everything in the book. Collins relied on other style manuals, as well as faculty and staff at Iowa State and other "experts" in the Ames community to compile the guide. The book was printed by ISU Printing Service and is a not- for-profit venture. Distributing the publications of campus clubs and organizations is part of the role of the bookstore, said Pam Mills, University Book Store manager. "This is a home-grown one, though, written, designed and printed right here on campus, so that's exciting." __________ University Relations Iowa State University
