Inside Iowa State Oct. 13, 1995 ______________ Announcements GRASS FOR CYCLONE STADIUM Dwayne McAninch, owner of McAninch Corp., West Des Moines, recently donated more than $150,000 in cash and in-kind gifts for a $1.2 million campaign to put grass into Cyclone Stadium. Part of the company's gift will be engineering expertise to help contain the cost of a grass field. ISU officials said a feasibility study for replacing the 10- year-old artificial turf recommended grass over another artificial surface for several reasons, including cost and preference by players and fans. Cyclone Stadium/Jack Trice Field has had artificial turf since it opened in 1975. The current turf was installed in 1985. The estimated cost of installing grass is $800,000. Another $100,000 will purchase a cover for the playing field to be used during stadium concerts. The project budget also includes $300,000 for planning and contingency costs. ISU, U OF I SHARE ESTATE Iowa State and the University of Iowa will share the bulk of a $22 million estate left by F. W. Miller of Rockwell City. Miller, an attorney and farm manager who died March 29 at the age of 97, left a will that creates the Miller Endowment Trust. Income from the trust is to be split evenly between ISU and the U of I and used primarily for scholarships, concerts and lectures at the universities. The Miller estate includes a residence in Rockwell City and 31 farms totaling nearly 7,200 acres in Calhoun, Sac and Webster counties. The farms and residence have been valued at $14.3 million. The estate also includes stocks and bonds worth $6.7 million; mortgages, notes and cash of $497,000; and other assets worth nearly $449,000. Miller grew up in Rockwell City, graduated from Grinnell College and Harvard Law School and practiced law in Chicago for the Santa Fe Railroad before returning to Rockwell City to manage his parents' farms and practice law. ENDOWED CHAIR Three couples gave Iowa State more than $500,000 to kick off a fund-raising effort to establish the Mary Louise Smith Endowed Chair in Women and Politics. A total of $1 million is needed. The private funds include $250,000 from State Board of Regents President Marvin Pomerantz, and his wife, Rose Lee Pomerantz, Des Moines. Additional gifts were received from John and Joan Axel, Muscatine; and Sharon and Richard Rodine, Norman, Okla. Smith, an Eddyville native, is the only woman to have chaired the National Committee of the Republican Party, a position she held from 1974 through 1977. In 1976 she became the first woman to organize and call to order the national convention of a major U.S. political party. Smith was inducted into the Iowa Women's Hall of Fame in 1977 and is a founding member of the Iowa Women's Political Caucus. The Mary Louise Smith Endowed Chair will be filled annually with a scholar who will be involved in teaching, research and outreach activities associated with the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics. The chair is one of only four ISU faculty chairs named for women. __________ University Relations Iowa State University
