RETIREMENT ADVISING SEMINAR A three-part retirement advising seminar begins Tuesday, Sept. 26, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Memorial Union Pioneer Room. The seminar is aimed at staff and their spouses/friends who plan to retire within a decade. Part I will cover Social Security, Medicare and dental and medical insurance. KIDS' HARD TIMES A series of programs following real children through their daily lives will air on WOI AM and FM the week of Sept. 25. Linda Ellerbee, Peabody Award-winning anchor of Nickelodeon's Nick News, hosts the five half-hour documentaries. The Lives of the Children breaks through barriers of race, class and geography. The series concludes with a two-hour forum featuring advocates, educators and policy makers. The series will air on WOI FM (90.1) at 6:30 p.m. Monday- Friday, Sept. 25-29, with the forum 7-9 p.m. on Sept. 29. On WOI-AM (640), the series will air at 11:30 a.m. Monday- Friday, Sept. 25-29, with the forum 1-3 p.m. on Sept. 30. POSTAL RATE CHANGES Postal rate changes and new rules for advertising in mailings take effect Oct. 1. Rates increase by 3.3 percent for Third-Class non-profit mail. Increases also affect Library-Rate mail. This the third of six annual increases for non-profit mail, intended to eliminate the differential between non-profit and regular rates by 1999. Printing Services has updated a rate comparison chart to help departments estimate bulk mailing costs. Call 4-3601 for a copy. New restrictions on advertising in mailings mean some materials no longer will qualify for the bulk non-profit rate. A summary sheet is available from Printing Services. REIMAN GARDENS PLANT SALE Gardeners can add a touch of the old Horticulture Garden to their own yards during a garden sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept.30, at Reiman Gardens, south of the stadium. For sale will be iris, lamb's ear, sedums, ajuga, coreopsis and many other perennials. All plants will be potted or bagged, labeled and suitable for fall planting. Money raised by the sale will be used to purchase a permanent labeling system for the plants in the Reiman Gardens. The Hort Club will sell apples and cider. WINTERSTEEN NAMED INTERIM DIRECTOR OF AG EXTENSION Extension entomologist Wendy Wintersteen has been named interim director of ISU Extension to Agriculture. Wintersteen also will serve as interim associate dean for industry programs for the College of Agriculture. She will manage and coordinate a large and multidisciplinary program in agricultural extension. She succeeds Nolan Hartwig, who became the interim vice provost for ISU Extension on Aug. 1. HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH The Iowa State community will observe national Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15 to Oct. 14. Planned events include an opening parade today (Sept. 15) from Curtiss Hall to Beardshear Hall, beginning at noon; a Latino-American festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Memorial Union Great Hall Sept. 25; a keynote address by Puerto Rican actress and director Angela Meyer at 7 p.m. Oct. 9 in the Memorial Union Pioneer Room; and a closing reception and dance at 8 p.m. Oct. 14 in the Memorial Union Sun Room. BACK TO SCHOOL Classes in the ISU College for Seniors begin Monday, Sept. 18, and Tuesday, Sept. 19, and run for eight weeks. Individuals 55 years or older and retired or semi-retired may enroll.
