VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR SUCCEEDING WITH STUDENTS PROGRAM THIS FALL by Diana Pounds The call is out for 150 volunteers to guide discussion groups this November during the campus-wide learning exercise Succeeding With Students. "This exercise will involve faculty and staff from every department and position in the university, and we hope to recruit discussion leaders from across the campus," said Vicky Thorland-Oster, intern in the President's Office and Human Resource Services training specialist. "Volunteers don't need special qualifications other than willingness to participate," Thorland-Oster said. "Their task will be to guide small discussion groups through an easy-to- follow format developed by Root Learning Inc., the Perrysburg, Ohio, firm that is assisting Iowa State in the project." Root staff will train about a quarter of the ISU volunteers, who, in turn, will train the remaining volunteers. Volunteers will be asked to work at least two of the five days set aside for Succeeding With Students sessions. Sessions will be held Nov. 13, 14, 20, 21 and 30. "We hope many faculty and staff will help with this program and that their supervisors will provide them release time to serve as volunteers," said Steve Richardson, chair of the Succeeding With Students steering committee. "This is one of the most ambitious, exciting and different faculty and staff learning exercises ever tried on this campus. It has enormous potential to move this university forward." All 6,000 ISU faculty and staff are encouraged to attend one of the Succeeding With Students sessions. The three- to four- hour sessions are designed to open campus-wide dialogue about trends in higher education, what those trends mean for Iowa State and how the university can better serve its students. The Succeeding With Students program is designed to get employees involved in interpreting information, generating ideas and ultimately, helping Iowa State change, Thorland- Oster said. HOW TO VOLUNTEER To volunteer, contact Vicky Thorland-Oster by Friday, Sept. 8, by telephone (4-9443) or e-mail (vlthorl@iastate.edu). Provide your name, campus address and phone number. Also, indicate on which of the five November dates you can provide training and whether you are available for a full or half day. _____ contact: Diana Pounds, Internal Communications, (515) 294 4845 updated: 9-1-95
