Torres Resigns As Affirmative Action Director; Johnson Named Interim David Torres, director of the Affirmative Action Office, resigned from that position effective Aug. 1. He has accepted an eight-month appointment as an adjunct faculty member in the department of professional studies in the College of Education. He plans to leave the university at the end of that appointment to move in a different career direction. "I've been involved with affirmative action for more than 20 years, and I believe it's time for a change," Torres said. He said the current uncertainty nationally over affirmative action programs had nothing to do with his decision. President Martin Jischke said, "I appreciate David's efforts on behalf of Iowa State in the more than 16 months he has been here. I wish him the best as he makes this change." He added that Iowa State will continue its strong commitment to affirmative action and equal opportunity. Jischke said Jeanne Johnson has been appointed interim director of the Affirmative Action Office, effective Aug. 15. Johnson has worked in University Legal Services and in the Affirmative Action Office, and her appointment as interim director will be on a half-time basis. A national search for a new director will begin immediately. _____ contact: News Service, (515) 294-3720 updated: 8-17-95
