Awards CHAIR-ELECT Richard Seagrave, distinguished professor of chemical engineering, is chair-elect of the national Engineering Accreditation Commission, which is part of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. The commission accredits engineering colleges nationwide. Seagrave will serve as vice-chair for policy during the 1995-96 academic year and chair during 1996-97. DISTANCE ED AWARD Kenneth Kruempel, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, received a distance education award from the National Technological University (NTU), a consortium of 45 national universities committed to distance education. Kruempel teaches electrical engineering courses through NTU. The award is based on student evaluations of their long distance teachers. GRAND AWARD "A History of Achievement. A Future of Success," a 26-page brochure on the College of Engineering, won a Grand Award in the Apex '95 competition sponsored by Communication Concepts Inc. Of 376 entries in the brochure category, the engineering college's entry was one of four to receive a grand award. The brochure's text was written by Janet Rohler, manager of Engineering Publication and Communication Services; photos were taken by Michael Haynes, manager of Photo Services. DISTINGUISHED SERVICE Louis Thompson, emeritus associate dean of the College of Agriculture and emeritus professor of agronomy, received the 1995 Award for Distinguished Service to Agriculture from the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation. PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATION Mike Shupp, general merchandise manager for the University Book Store, has earned designation as a Certified Store Professional from the National Association of College Stores. The designation recognizes experience and involvement in the college store industry, community service and successful completion of an exam. PRESIDENT-ELECT Bernard Pitts, associate director of the Memorial Union, was named president-elect for the Association of College Unions- International. He will serve as president in 1996-97. With more than 1,000 members in eight countries, the association helps its members provide activities programs that contribute to college students' development. RESEARCH RECOGNITION Richard Ross, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, received the 1995 American Feed Industry Award from the American Veterinary Medicine Association's Council on Research. The annual award recognizes outstanding nutritional or disease research on livestock or poultry by a veterinarian. Ross was honored for his research on swine respiratory diseases, especially mycoplasmas.
