Peters Elected Senate President by Linda Charles One of the priorities of the new Faculty Senate president will be undergraduate education. "I'm dedicated to improving undergraduate education," said Ron Peters, professor of psychology, who was elected president during the May 9 meeting. Other goals Peters listed will be improving communication with the administration; working on the diversity requirement; ensuring the academic progress of student- athletes; and improved relationships with the people of Iowa. Also elected to Faculty Senate posts were Joanna Courteau, professor of foreign languages and literatures, as vice president, and Jim Hutter, associate professor of political sciences, as secretary. The following Faculty Senate council chairs also were elected: --Academic Affairs, Ken Kruempel, associate professor of electrical engineering and computer engineering. --Faculty Development and Administrative Relations, Hamilton Cravens, professor of history. --Faculty Governance, Bill VanMeter, professor of physiology and pharmacology. --Judiciary and Appeals, Dick Seagrave, distinguished professor in chemical engineering. In other business, the senate approved a new high school requirement for admission to the university. Students no longer will be required to complete a year of U.S. history and a semester of U.S. government as part of a two-year social studies requirement. And students seeking admission to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will need to complete three years of social studies. Two years of social studies will continue to be required for admission to the colleges of Agriculture, Business, Design, Education, Engineering, and Family and Consumer Sciences. Also approved May 2 were: --A statement that asserts course-related presentations are owned by the presenter, and notes and recordings of the presentations may not be sold without written permission. --A systems engineering major, Iowa State's first interdepartmental master of engineering degree program.
