Retirement Advising Office: Extras After You Retire Besides health insurance, what other benefits or privileges do employees have when they retire from Iowa State University? Most of us are aware of the big benefits -- a paid-up life insurance policy, sick-leave payout and the right to continue the hospital/medical group and dental plans. TIAA-CREF annuity payments can begin at retirement, as do Social Security benefits for those who are at least 62 and retired. These are benefits employees sign up for before they retire. There are some other benefits you can choose -- "extras" that perhaps you haven't counted on. They include a retiree's ID card, which allows you to receive an ISU library card. You also may continue receiving the faculty/staff newspaper Inside Iowa State and begin receiving the ISU Retirees Newsletter and the College for Seniors brochure. Other benefits include a free campus general (Lot C) parking permit; a 20 percent discount on purchases at the ISU Press and access to campus recreation facilities and Veenker Golf Course. As an ISU retiree, you may audit one class each semester at Iowa State (with permission of the instructor); enroll in a class or two each semester offered by the College for Seniors; participate in free socials and programs sponsored by the ISU Retirees Committee and attend a yearly holiday dinner and May picnic (there is a small charge for food). Many of these benefits are designed to help you keep in touch with university happenings and with your former co-workers. The benefits described above are listed in the Retirement Handbook, available from the Retirement Advising Office, 88 Scheman.
