Announcements SPECIAL OLYMPICS More than 3,500 persons with mental and physical disabilities, from age 8 to 80, are on campus this weekend to participate in the 1995 Iowa Special Olympics State Summer Games. Each participant qualified for the state meet after competing at the local level. The athletes will compete in a variety of events, including track and field, soccer, cycling, swimming, tennis, roller skating, golf and race walking. This is the 10th year Ames has hosted the Special Olympics summer games. Events began Thursday and will continue through noon Saturday. Volunteers still are needed, especially on Saturday. Persons interested in volunteering should go to the volunteer check-in area at the west end of the Lied Athletic Recreation Facility between 8 am. and 4 p.m. Friday, May 26, or between 8 a.m. and noon Saturday, May 27. TALK OF IOWA President Martin Jischke and horticulture department chair Michael Chaplin will be guests on the Wednesday, June 7, Talk of Iowa radio show. They will report on the progress of the Reiman Gardens. Talk of Iowa, which airs weekdays on WOI-AM, begins at 10 a.m. WOI-AM is at 640 on the radio dial. FOREIGN EXCHANGES Faculty interested in participating in an exchange with a foreign university with which ISU has a formal agreement should obtain instructions and application forms in the Study Abroad Center, 5 Hamilton. Liquid nitrogen and dry ice will be sold ONLY at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. during the inventory period. The cutoff for items billed on FY95 funds is noon on June 29. Chemistry Stores hours are 7:30-11:50 a.m. and 12:30-4 p.m. through Aug. 11. FOREIGN TRAVEL GRANTS Applications for foreign travel grants are due by noon Oct. 16 in the Faculty Senate Office, 101 Lab of Mechanics. Faculty should check with their deans' offices for college deadlines. Travel dates should be between Aug. 16, 1995, and May 15, 1996. P&S PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT GRANTS The next deadline to apply for P&S professional development grants is June 1. Guidelines for submitting proposals are available in the Office of the Provost, 107 Beardshear. Questions should be directed to a member of the P&S Professional Development Committee or the Office of the Provost, 4-5882. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO PLANT FLOWERS Volunteers interested in putting their green thumbs to work are needed at Reiman Gardens from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, beginning June 5. Volunteers will help with a variety of gardening jobs, including unpotting, planting and watering thousands of flowers. Jobs will vary from light to moderate work. Interested persons may sign up for a time to work at the gardens by calling 4-2710 or faxing a message to 4-4817. Located south of Cyclone Stadium/Jack Trice Field, the Reiman Gardens will open this summer. The seven-acre facility will include rose, herb, wetlands and other gardens.
