Recreation/Athletic Center Named For Lied The recreation/athletic center has been named the Ernst F. Lied Recreation/Athletic Center in recognition of a $5 million cash gift to ISU from the Ernst F. Lied Trust, Las Vegas, Nev. The gift is funding the Christina Hixson Opportunity Awards. The $2,500 scholarships will be given annually to 100 Iowans who, if not for the awards, might not be able to attend ISU. Hixson, a native of Clarinda and Lied's longtime business associate, is the sole trustee of the Lied Foundation Trust. The $5 million donation is the largest single cash gift in one year to an Iowa public university, said Murray Blackwelder, president of the ISU Foundation. Lied, who died in 1980, was a successful businessman who moved from Omaha to Las Vegas in 1959. His estate created the Lied trust. The recreation/athletic center was completed in 1990. _____ contact: News Service, (515) 294-3129 updated: 03-24-95
