Vote for Ames

You can help make the city of Ames a Blue Zones community as part of the governor's healthiest state initiative. City and campus organizers are asking residents to pledge their support by voting for Ames online. Only 10 Iowa communities will be selected for the project, which will provide resources and programs to help citizens enjoy longer, better lives.

Participants selected for 2012 Emerging Leaders Academy

The Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost has selected 30 participants (17 faculty and 13 staff members) for the 2012 Emerging Leaders Academy (ELA). The 2012 cohort will meet monthly beginning Jan. 26, 2012, and continue through December; no classes are planned for June and July. A list of the 2012 participants (PDF) is available online.

Chemistry Stores sets holiday hours

Chemistry Stores, 1400 Gilman, has set its hour for the holiday period. Daily deliveries will continue, but may be delayed due to limited staff numbers. The schedule is:

  • Dec. 23 and 26: Closed (University holidays)
  • Dec. 27: Open (limited staff)
  • Dec. 28: Closed
  • Dec. 29-30: Open
  • Jan. 2 (University holiday)

Recycle your old phonebooks; Dec. 12 is collection week

With the arrival on campus of Fall 2011 phonebooks, ISU's recycling committee will coordinate recycling of previous years' editions. Place old phonebooks in collection boxes in your building. Campus services staff will pick up the boxes from loading docks at more than 80 buildings the week of Dec. 12. For more information, contact Sue Mallas, 4-0692.

Flu vaccine still available for employees

There still are some flu vaccinations available for employees who missed the October flu shot clinic. Employees should contact Occupational Medicine, 4-2056, to schedule an appointment.

Position changes in the controller's department

Effective Jan. 1, 2012, associate controller Kathy Dobbs will be promoted to controller. Controller Stephanie Fox will become the Kuali Financial System (KFS) project manager. Contact information for Dobbs and Fox will remain the same. However, Fox's new office will be located on the second floor of the Administrative Services Building.

Cyclone hockey hosts faculty/staff appreciation night

Faculty and staff who show their university ID card receive $1 off the price of admission when the Iowa State hockey team plays the Maple Grove Energy of the Minnesota Junior Hockey League Dec. 10 (7:30 p.m., Ames/ISU hockey arena).

Rec Services to offer free trial period at State Gym

Recreation Services is offering ISU faculty and staff a free trial period at the newly renovated State Gym and its addition when the facility opens for business at 6 a.m. on Jan. 9. The trial period runs through Jan. 22. Faculty and staff must present their ISU Card for access. The free trial is open only to eligible nonstudent members -- student spouses, faculty, staff, retirees, alumni, affiliates (such as ISU Foundation and alumni association employees) and their spouses. Next Osborn Club lecture is Dec. 12

Monica Lamm, associate professor in the department of chemical and biological engineering, will present "Computer Simulations of Nanomaterials at Large" for the next Osborn Club public lecture Dec. 12 (7 p.m., Gold Room, Hilton Garden Inn, 1325 Dickenson Ave., Ames). The lecture follows the club member dinner.

Benefits confirmation statements available online Dec. 2

Most benefits-eligible faculty, professional and scientific, supervisory merit and non-supervisory merit employees may log on to AccessPlus beginning today to review confirmation statements for their 2012 benefits elections. Employees have until Dec. 9 to report errors. Instruction on how to reports changes are on the confirmation statements.
