Summer construction impacts sidewalk access near Design

Sidewalk map

Construction of the Biorenewables Research Laboratory, located between the College of Design and Howe Hall, includes utility work that will close a lengthy section of sidewalk along the west side of Bissell Road for much of the summer.

On March 25, about 300 feet of the sidewalk north of the CyRide bus stop (near Howe) was closed for the first phase of utility work. A section of sidewalk that runs

diagonally toward the Design building also was closed, along with a portion of the east/west sidewalk south of Design.

On May 11, utility work will expand north, closing the Bissell west sidewalk nearly all the way to Osborn Drive. The closure is anticipated to last three months. Mike Fields, construction manager of the project, encourages pedestrians to avoid walking in the road.

"For personal safety, please do not walk in the west lane of traffic, parallel to the site fence, to access any of the campus facilities," he said.

Alternate routes

Pedestrians have a couple of options to avoid the fenced-off construction area. One alternative is to use the sidewalk along the east side of Bissell, utilizing the crosswalk at the Osborn intersection. A crosswalk also is located near the Howe bus stop.

Another choice is to use the existing east/west sidewalk between the construction area and Howe, which intersects with a sidewalk that runs from Howe to Design (along parking lot 6) on the west side of the construction area.

Summary

Utility work along Bissell Road will close sidewalks near the Design College for much of the summer.
