Pendry retirement reception

A retirement reception for Patricia Pendry, secretary in the College of Veterinary Medicine, will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, March 5, in 2542 Vet Med.

Learning community awards

Nominations for the 2008-09 Learning Community Awards will be accepted through April 3. Information about the awards and nomination process is online.

NCAA Coach Talk added

Anticipating a post-season tournament berth, an additional Coach Talk with Cyclone head women's basketball coach Bill Fennelly is planned for March 17 (noon, Memorial Union Great Hall). Bring your lunch and your questions to the talk. The event is free; door prizes are awarded.

Barista Café celebrates anniversary

The Barista Café, a student-run café in Buchanan Hall, will celebrate its second anniversary Feb. 27. Student shareholders will serve free coffee from 4 to 5:30 p.m. The Barista Café serves as an experiential learning component for the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Learning Community.

Comments sought on draft policy

A draft of the proposed Communication Technology policy is available for public review and comment in the Policy Library. It outlines university parameters for funding communication technology devices and services, including cellular voice/text messaging services or cellular ISP data service for devices such as smart phones, PDAs and cell modems/port devices. Submit comments by March 13 to policy@iastate.edu.

Faculty satisfaction survey summary

ISU ADVANCE research team members Sandra Gahn and Jason Pontius will discuss results of the Association of American Universities Data Exchange faculty satisfaction survey March 2 (2-3 p.m., Memorial Union Gallery). Copies of the research report will be distributed, and there will be time for questions.

Hunger banquet is March 3

ISU's annual Hunger Banquet will be held March 3 (7 p.m., Memorial Union Campanile Room). Proceeds will be donated to Oxfam America and a local food pantry. Tickets are $5 per person ($1 discount for groups of five or more). Receive an additional $1 off with a donation of two nonperishable food items.

International women's day celebration

The YWCA Ames-ISU is co-hosting a celebration of International Women's Day March 8 (2-4 p.m., Ames Public Library). The event will feature a panel discussion of women from around the world, followed by refreshments. For more information, contact Julia Mitrushi, 4-1663.

Iowa Staters are living healthy

ISU leads Iowa and Northern Iowa with the most participants (849) in the Live Healthy Iowa Challenge. ISU has lost 1,295 pounds in 50 days. A celebration is planned for March 4 (10 a.m.-2 p.m., Lied), featuring a health fair, fitness assessments, team photos, a success-sharing session and refreshments. A 30-minute group fitness walk begins at 12:10 p.m. Live Healthy Iowa State participants will be admitted free, and are encouraged to wear their Live Healthy Iowa shirts.

Michele Norris, co-host of National Public Radio's All Things Considered, will give the keynote address at the Iowa State Conference on Race and Ethnicity March 6 (4 p.m., Memorial Union Great Hall). The forum on issues of race and ethnicity includes concurrent sessions by students, staff and faculty. Continental breakfast and lunch are provided. Register online.
