Emerging Leaders Academy inaugural class boasts 20 members

by Diana Pounds

Twenty faculty and P&S staff members will make up the first class of Iowa State's new Emerging Leaders Academy.

The leadership development program is similar to one created by executive vice president and provost Elizabeth Hoffman during her tenure as president of the University of Colorado.

"An immensely talented group of on-campus and outside experts will help the class develop leadership skills during a series of workshops throughout the year," Hoffman said. "Class members will explore such topics as decision-making styles, organizational theory, leadership theory, balancing family and professional roles, and effects of gender and diversity issues on work teams."

J.D. Beatty, a retired faculty member and ISU administrator, chaired the committee that developed the academy. The program is an executive vice president and provost office initiative to enhance leadership development opportunities for faculty and P&S staff, particularly those already in administrative roles or considering administrative positions in the future.

This year's class was selected by nomination. A new Emerging Leaders Academy class will be chosen in a similar process in early October 2009.
