Coover dedication

It's too new to have a name yet, but a robot designed and built by assistant professor Alexander Stoytchev (fourth from right) and his electrical and computer engineering students cut the ribbon at an Oct. 2 celebration that opened phase 1 of the new Electrical and Computer Engineering Building adjacent to Coover Hall. That's dedication

Clear your calendar, the month of October is full of ribbons to be cut.

Some of Iowa State's construction bustle will be capped this month with dedication ceremonies, celebrating the completion of six campus projects. All the events are free and open to the public.

It started Oct. 2 with a dedication of phase 1 of the new Electrical and Computer Engineering Building, adjacent to the west side of Coover Hall. Phase 1 ($16.5 million) added 23,000 square feet of space. Another 33,000 square feet of space is planned for phase 2 ($22.3 million), which breaks ground in 2010.

The Elizabeth and Byron Anderson Sculpture Garden installation was celebrated Oct. 3. The area south of Morrill Hall has sculptures amid landscaping and gathering places. Exhibitions will rotate every two years.

Next on the list is the Seed Science Center addition. Completion of the $2 million expansion will be celebrated at a 10:30 a.m. ceremony Oct. 14. Construction added 5,000 square feet to the west side of the building, which is located at the intersection of Osborn Drive and Wallace Road.

The Oct. 18 dedication of the Dr. W. Eugene and Linda Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center will begin at 9:30 a.m., two hours prior to kickoff of the Iowa State-Nebraska football game. The ceremony will open the $48 million project (phase 1 of planned renovations and construction). Facility tours will be available for the equine and large animal hospital, and the diagnostic laboratory. Jake, the horse that took part in the groundbreaking ceremony by pulling a walking plow, will participate in the dedication festivities.

The dedication of the Alumni Center on Beach Avenue appropriately is scheduled for Homecoming weekend (Oct. 25). This ceremony also is contingent on a kickoff time, planned to begin three hours prior to the Iowa State-Texas A&M football game. The dedication program will be held during the alumni association's "Cyclone Central" tailgate at the $10.7 million, 34,500-square-foot building. The event is free, but registration for the tailgate buffet is required.

Rounding out the month-long list of events is an Oct. 28 dedication (4-5 p.m.) that officially opens the multicultural center in the Memorial Union. The space was created with a $1.1 million renovation of the former ISU alumni association offices on the MU second floor (see related story).
