Sample the Arts

Free 'Sample' at Stephens Aug. 24

by Erin Rosacker

Performing arts fans can get in the mood for this season's Iowa State Center lineup with a free "sample" Aug. 24.

Sample the Arts will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. in Stephens Auditorium and is open to the public. Partnering with the Ames Community Arts Council, the center will bring in local talent for an open house of displays and performances.

"We are thrilled to celebrate the opening of the fall arts season with so many great performances on the horizon, from Indian dance to vocal music," said Patti Cotter, development and sponsorship manager at the Iowa State Center. "From Shakespeare to symphonies and a brass quintet, the arts in Ames will be alive and well this year."

Free ice cream, beverages and hands-on activities make the event appropriate for all ages. A prize package worth more than $200 will be awarded, and backstage tours of Stephens will leave from the ground floor every half hour.

Live music, theater and dance performances by local groups and individuals -- including ISU dance and music programs -- will take place throughout the event.

"It's free and it's fun," Cotter said. "It's very gratifying to see how many arts organizations call Ames 'home' -- each unique and inspiring for people of all ages."
